The New York Stock Exchange opens its first permanent headquarters at 10-12 Broad near Wall Street in New York City. The steamboat SS Sultana, carrying 2,300 passengers, explodes and sinks in the Mississippi River, killing 1,700, most of whom are Union survivors of the Andersonville Prison. In North Bend, Ohio (a suburb of Cincinnati), the first train robbery in the United States takes place. End of the Civil War. Major Henry Wirz, the superintendent of a prison camp in Andersonville, Georgia, is hanged, becoming the only American Civil War soldier to be executed for war crimes. |
